Organic Bergamots
Organic Bergamots
Bergamot: sale
Bergamot is a very valuable citrus fruit, rich in vitamin C, which is used for its beneficial properties: according to several studies published internationally, it is good for the heart and keeps excess cholesterol under control , thus helping to prevent cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, arteriosclerosis and heart attack.
Our organic bergamot is not treated even after harvesting (so no waxes or anti-molds are used which give a better appearance and increase the shelf life). The harvest takes place on the same day of shipping, so our bergamots are not only genuine and untreated but also very fresh.
How we produce our organic bergamots
Our organic bergamots are grown in open fields following the organic production method (certified). Thanks to the absence of treatments after harvesting, it is possible to use the peel, rich in essential oils, to aromatically enrich many dishes in the kitchen or to prepare liqueurs. Precisely because of their genuineness, given the absence of treatments, they may present defects on the peel that do not compromise the organoleptic and nutritional qualities.
Preservation of organic bergamot
Our untreated bergamots , thanks to their freshness, last for several weeks after harvesting. However, you need to pay attention to the place of storage, which must be a dry and cool environment, such as a veranda or a balcony, but away from direct contact with the sun's rays, checking them from time to time. It is best to store them in a non-crowded place, preferably in large baskets. Later, you can extend their shelf life by storing them in the refrigerator in perforated bags. The important thing is to avoid completely sealed containers, as condensation could cause mold to form. If, however, you want to store the bergamot juice to always have it fresh and on hand, all you have to do is squeeze the bergamots and filter the juice, adding (if you like) some sugar. Pour the juice into freezer containers (ice cube bags are also fine) and store in the freezer. When you want a nice bergamot juice, just put a few cubes in a glass and dissolve in a little warm water.

Where Bergamot Grows
Bergamot, thanks to a particular microclimate, grows almost exclusively along the Ionian coast in the province of Reggio Calabria, so much so that it has become a true symbol. The cultivated area is a flat area and well sheltered from the wind thanks to the hills that surround it. It extends for about 150 kilometers and is about 2 kilometers from the sea. As for the climate, the area is classified as humid temperate tropical, characterized by mild winters and hot summers without rain. There are about 300 sunny days per year.
Bergamot, plant: characteristics
The bergamot plant has an expanded shape and can reach 4-5 meters in height. The trunk is similar to that of other citrus species, with several irregular branches, while the branches are thin and thornless. The flowers are white and very fragrant, while the leaves are very shiny and leathery, similar to those of the orange. Flowering occurs at the beginning of April. The fruits are medium-large in size, with flattened poles, and have a color that, depending on the stage of ripeness, ranges from green in November to yellow in February. The peel has a medium thickness, while the pulp is green and yellow in color and very juicy.
Bergamot: properties and how to use it
Despite its very bitter taste, bergamot juice is widely used because it has many beneficial properties : thanks to the flavonoids it provides excellent antioxidant power, while the high content of polyphenols and citric acid reduces triglycerides and blood sugar. For all these reasons, bergamot helps to combat cardiovascular problems, heart attacks and strokes. Furthermore, several studies by the International Journal of Cardiology have proven that bergamot helps to lower bad cholesterol levels. To stay healthy, therefore, a good bergamot juice is what you need: if you don't like the too bitter taste, you can mix the bergamot with the juice of another fruit, such as apples, oranges or mandarins, or dilute with water and add sweetener.
Bergamot Oil: How to Use It
Bergamot is a citrus fruit that lends itself to a wide variety of uses both in the kitchen and in other fields, including the cosmetic one with the production of the famous bergamot essential oil , which is obtained by cold pressing the peel.
