The Satsuma Miyagawa mandarin is a very early variety that ripens in September. It is characterized by the absence of seeds, a beautiful orange pulp, a particular aroma and green or yellowish skin, even when fully ripe .
It is a variety of mandarin that helps the immune system to prevent diseases and infections, as it is rich in Vitamin C. Furthermore, it is a natural source of potassium, useful for regulating hypertension, and antioxidants.

Satsuma Miyagawa Mandarins: Characteristics
Satsuma mandarins are native to the Far East and are particularly widespread in Japan. For several decades they have also been grown in Southern Italy as they are a very early variety that can be harvested starting in September. The Satsuma mandarin plant differs from other citrus fruits due to its compact size, low vigour and very broad leaves. It is also characterised by an early entry into production, good productivity and resistance to low temperatures.
The fruit is small in size and flattened at the poles. In addition, it is seedless and very juicy, which is why it is highly appreciated by consumers as an early variety before the start of the actual citrus season.
In Italy, even when they reach full ripeness, Satsuma mandarins have green or yellow-tinged skin . This characteristic is due to the presence of chlorophyll, which begins to disappear when the night temperature drops below 13 °C. The orange color of citrus fruits is instead due to carotenoids and xanthophylls, which do not appear in the absence of cold.
