Navelina Orange
The Navelina orange is a type of orange belonging to the group of navel-shaped blond oranges (called “Navel”), which are characterized by the presence of a scar that resembles the umbilical scar. This is due to syncarpy (the presence of multiple fruits in one), a phenomenon that leads to the formation of a second fruit of smaller dimensions. Another characteristic of these fruits is seedlessness, therefore there are no seeds in the pulp, except for some traces of undeveloped ones.
On this site you can buy organic and untreated Naveline Oranges produced in Calabria in full respect of nature. For cultivation, natural fertilizer is used or green manure is used, a technique that consists of burying certain herbaceous species to maintain and improve soil fertility. The oranges are harvested by hand without undergoing any post-harvest treatment, such as wax or anti-mold.
Navelina Orange: Characteristics
The Navelina orange is very widespread in Southern Italy and in other countries of the Mediterranean basin. In Italy it has spread thanks to its early ripening and its organoleptic characteristics. In fact, the harvest is carried out as early as November, several months earlier than other cultivars (e.g. Tarocco ).
Naveline oranges are medium-large in size, have a crunchy pulp and a flavour with little acidity that becomes sweeter as the months go by: the harvest can also be postponed to early spring when a high sugar content is reached.
Navelina Orange: How to Use It
The Navelina orange is very suitable for fresh consumption. It is ideal for being eaten in segments (the peel is quite thick and can be removed easily) or for being used in a mixed salad (lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, etc.).
In Calabria, it is also used to prepare the so-called “Orange Salad”, in which Naveline oranges are seasoned with oil, a little vinegar and salt. Finally, they are also ideal for making jams or the peel (if it comes from untreated oranges ) can be used to make candied fruit.
